ZNF234 (Zinc Finger Protein 234), also known as HZF4 or ZNF269, is located on chromosome 19q13.31. ZNF226 is an important paralog of ZNF234 gene. ZNF234 belongs to the krueppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Zinc finger proteins have been shown to interact with nucleic acids and to have diverse functions. The zinc finger domain is a conserved amino acid sequence motif containing 2 specifically positioned cysteines and 2 histidines that are involved in coordinating zinc. Kruppel-related proteins form 1 family of zinc finger proteins. The predicted ZNF234 protein, which consists of more than 695 amino acids, contains a KRAB A domain in the N terminus; a short spacer region, which does not share sequence similarity with the spacer regions of ZNF91 (603971) subfamily members; and a degenerate zinc finger motif followed by 18 canonical zinc finger motifs.
