Sarmentosine, a naturally occuring glycoside, is a member of the class of compounds known as fatty acyl glycosides of mono- and disaccharides extracted from Ribes nigrum and from parts of P. sarmentosum. Sarmentosin is an unsaturated γ-hydroxynitrile glucoside known from plants and some Lepidoptera. It is structurally and biosynthetically closely related to cyanogenic glucosides, which are commonly sequestered from food plants and/or de novo synthesized by lepidopteran species. Sarmentosine exhibited zero oral bioavailability because it was neither detected in plasma nor in tissues, and in urine.
