Zofenopril calcium (SQ-26991) is a novel and potent ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor, antihypertensive drug and an antioxidant. Zofenopril is a prodrug that has to undergo metabolic hydrolysis to produce the active free sulfhydryl compound zofenoprilat, which is an ACE inhibitor. Zofenopril protects the heart and can reduce high blood pressure. It is more effective in reducing hypertension than other antihypertensive drugs such as atenolol and enalapril, and was associated with fewer adverse effects.
