Naltrexone (trade names ReVia and Vivitrol among others) is a medication mainly used to manage alcohol or opioid
dependence. An opioid-dependent person should not receive naltrexone
before detoxification. It is taken by mouth or by injection into a
muscle. As a drug that reverses the effects of opioids, it is used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and opioid dependence. It should not be confused with naloxone or nalorphine, which are used in emergency cases of opioid overdose.
