CC -!- FUNCTION: Component of antiviral defense system DISARM (defense island
CC system associated with restriction-modification), composed of DrmE,
CC DrmA, DrmB, DrmC and DrmMII. DISARM is probably a multi-gene
CC restriction module, this subunit is probably a phospholipase or
CC nuclease. Expression of DISARM in B.subtilis (strain BEST7003) confers
CC resistance to phages Nf, phi29, phi105, phi3T, SPO1, SPR and SPP1.
CC Protection is over 10(7)-fold against phi3T, 10(4)-10(5)-fold against
CC Nf, phi29, phi105 and SPR, 100-fold against SPO1 and 10-fold against
CC SPP1. DISARM does not interfere with phage adsorption, but instead
CC interferes with (phi3T) DNA replication early in its cycle, preventing
CC replication, circularization and lysogeny and probably causes phage DNA
CC degradation (DNA is degraded in SPP1-infected cells).
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:29085076}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Differentially required for bacteriophage
CC defense; when this gene is missing the DISARM system still confers
CC resistance against phi105, phi29, phi3T, SPP1 and SPR but reduced
CC protection against Nf and SPO1 in B.subtilis.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:29085076}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the phospholipase D family. {ECO:0000305}.
