CC -!- FUNCTION: Transcription factor that plays a role in the differentiation
CC and function of the CO(2)- and O(2)-sensing BAG neurons
CC (PubMed:21954162, PubMed:22479504, PubMed:30890567). The BAG neurons
CC are required for the behavioral avoidance of environmental CO(2) and
CC the sensing of decreased O(2) levels (PubMed:21954162, PubMed:22479504,
CC PubMed:28193866). Promotes the expression of genes that play a role in
CC CO(2)- and O(2)-sensing and in egg-laying in the BAG neurons
CC (PubMed:21954162). Positively regulates the transcription of the
CC receptor-type guanylate cyclase gcy-9, which is a critical component of
CC the CO(2) transduction pathway, in the BAG neurons (PubMed:22479504).
CC May mediate transcriptional activation by binding to the motif 5'-
CC ACTTCCG-3' (PubMed:22479504, PubMed:30890567). Acts in the BAG and ASG
CC neurons to regulate intestinal fat levels and to promote exploratory
CC behavior, possibly by regulating neuropeptidergic signaling
CC (PubMed:28193866). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21954162,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:22479504, ECO:0000269|PubMed:28193866,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:30890567}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000255|PROSITE-ProRule:PRU00237,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:22479504}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in a subset of head neurons, including
CC the BAG sensory neurons, the AWA amphid neurons and the ASG sensory
CC neurons. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21954162, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22479504,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:28193866, ECO:0000269|PubMed:30890567}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expressed throughout development and in adult
CC animals (PubMed:21954162). First expressed in the embryonic BAG neurons
CC (PubMed:30890567). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21954162,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:30890567}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Lack of CO(2) avoidance behavior
CC (PubMed:21954162, PubMed:22479504). Down-regulation of genes required
CC for BAG neuron differentiation and function (PubMed:21954162,
CC PubMed:22479504). Reduction in exploratory behavior and an increase of
CC animals in the quiescent state (PubMed:28193866). Unable to sense
CC downsteps of O(2) (PubMed:28193866). Increased intestinal fat storage
CC (PubMed:28193866). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21954162,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:22479504, ECO:0000269|PubMed:28193866}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the ETS family. {ECO:0000255|RuleBase:RU004019}.
