CC -!- FUNCTION: Forms tail fibers that play a role in primary attachment of
CC virion to host receptors. Assembles with Tail fiber assembly protein to
CC form fibers attached to virion tail tip. Fibers are about 35nm long and
CC have a thin, uniform diameter. There are presumaby six fibers per
CC virion. They bind in a reversible manner to host molecules, attaching
CC transiently the virion to the host until tail tip interacts with LamB
CC and injects viral DNA into the cell.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Interacts with Tail fiber assembly protein. {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Virion {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the tail fiber family. {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- CAUTION: The current laboratory strain of bacteriophage lambda are
CC descendants of a recombinant, lambdaPaPa derived from cross between
CC strains lambda Pasadena (Caltech) and Paris (Institut Pasteur). These
CC stains carry a frameshift mutation relative to lambda originally
CC derived from the original K12 E-Coli strain, called Ur-lambda. The Ur-
CC lambda virions have thin, jointed tail fibers (side tail fibers) that
CC are absent from lambda wild-type. Relative to lambda PaPa, Ur-lambda
CC has expanded receptor specificity and adsorbs to E.coli cells more
CC rapidly. {ECO:0000305}.
