CC -!- FUNCTION: Transcriptional activator. Activates ectoderm, in addition to
CC inhibiting mesoderm and endoderm formation; required at the blastula
CC stage for normal formation of both the central nervous system and
CC epidermis, the two early derivatives of the ectoderm. In addition, also
CC required to maintain the regional identity of the animal cells of the
CC blastula, the cells that are precursors of ectodermal structures. Also
CC plays a role in differential adhesion, which limits cell mixing as
CC primary germ layers become specified. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15901660,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:17229765}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000255, ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed dynamically in a dorsal to ventral wave
CC in the animal cap ectoderm in late blastula and gastrula stages.
CC Expression is present in the cap in a salt and pepper arrangement which
CC is maintained throughout early development. Expressed in lower levels
CC in the mesoderm. At later stages, expression is lost from the
CC developing nervous system, but epidermal expression persists through
CC tailbud stages. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15901660,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:17229765, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18234171}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expression begins at stage 8.5, after the mid-
CC blastula transition. Expression is highest at early gastrula stages and
CC is maintained throughout neurula, tailbud and early tadpole stages.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15901660}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Inhibited by nodal signaling downstream of vegt, and by
CC notch signaling downstream of dvr1/vg1. Neurula stage, but not early
CC stage, expression is regulated by canonical wnt signaling.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17229765, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18234171}.
