CC -!- FUNCTION: RNA chaperone that binds small regulatory RNA (sRNAs) and
CC mRNAs to facilitate mRNA translational regulation in response to
CC envelope stress, environmental stress and changes in metabolite
CC concentrations. Also binds with high specificity to tRNAs (By
CC similarity). Contributes to long-term survival under nutrient
CC deprivation, to stationary phase-dependent hydrogen peroxide and acid
CC stress resistance and is required for prolonged survival in the
CC intracellular environment of the host macrophage. Therefore,
CC contributes not only to a generalized stress response in stationary
CC phase but also to pathogenesis in mice, allowing the brucellae to adapt
CC to the harsh conditions encountered within macrophages.
CC {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00436, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10564509}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Cells show increased sensitivity to hydrogen
CC peroxide and decreased survival at pH 4.0 during stationary phase
CC growth. It is less able to withstand prolonged starvation. It fails to
CC replicate in cultured murine macrophages and is completely cleared from
CC spleens and livers of infected mice 10 weeks after infection.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10564509}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the Hfq family. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-
CC Rule:MF_00436}.
