CC -!- FUNCTION: Involved in 100S ribosome formation from 70S ribosomes; 100S
CC ribosomes are probably translationally inactive (PubMed:25422304).
CC Ribosome hibernation may be used by the cell to decrease overall energy
CC consumption under nutrient-limiting conditions (PubMed:26324267).
CC Unlike E.coli, 100S ribosomes are present from mid-exponential growth,
CC peak during the transition from log to stationary phase and then
CC decrease (PubMed:25422304). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:25422304,
CC ECO:0000305|PubMed:26324267}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Interacts with 100S ribosomes (PubMed:25422304).
CC {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00839, ECO:0000269|PubMed:25422304}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00839,
CC ECO:0000305|PubMed:25422304}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Transcribed early in log-phase growth, peaks at log to
CC stationary phase transition (PubMed:25422304). Repressed by growth in
CC the presence of glucose, which also decreases 100S ribosome content
CC (PubMed:25422304). Induced by growth in ethanol, NaCl, and 46 degrees
CC Celsius; stress respones are under control of the sigma-B factor (sigB)
CC (PubMed:25422304). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:25422304}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Loss of 100S ribosomes. Shows no change in growth
CC in pure culture after 13 days, however performs very poorly (about
CC 1000-fold decrease) in competition with wild-type (PubMed:25422304).
CC About 5-fold less virulent than wild-type upon oral or tail vein
CC injection of BALB/c mice (PubMed:25422304). Sensitive to aminoglycoside
CC antibiotics in stationary phase; sensitivity is suppressed by
CC transcription and translation inhibitors or by disrupting the proton
CC motive force (PubMed:26324267). Stationary phase cells have 5-fold
CC higher than normal levels of ATP and NADH and accumulates higher
CC intracellular levels of gentamicin (PubMed:26324267). Aminoglycosides
CC such as gentamicin bind to ribosomes and interfere with translation.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:25422304, ECO:0000269|PubMed:26324267}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the HPF/YfiA ribosome-associated protein family.
CC Long HPF subfamily. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00839,
CC ECO:0000305|PubMed:25422304}.
