CC -!- FUNCTION: Associates with IL12B to form the pro-inflammatory cytokine
CC IL-23 that plays different roles in innate and adaptive immunity.
CC Released by antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells or
CC macrophages, binds to a heterodimeric receptor complex composed of
CC IL12RB1 and IL23R to activate JAK2 and TYK2 which then phosphorylate
CC the receptor to form a docking site leading to the phosphorylation of
CC STAT3 and STAT4. This process leads to activation of several pathways
CC including p38 MAPK or NF-kappa-B and promotes the production of pro-
CC inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-17A/IL17A. In turn,
CC participates in the early and effective intracellular bacterial
CC clearance. Promotes the expansion and survival of T-helper 17 cells, a
CC CD4-positive helper T-cell subset that produces IL-17, as well as other
CC IL-17-producing cells. {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q9NPF7}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Heterodimer with IL12B; disulfide-linked. The heterodimer is
CC known as interleukin IL-23. Interacts with IL23R; this interaction
CC enables recruitment of IL12RB1. {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q9NPF7}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted {ECO:0000250}. Note=Secreted upon
CC association with IL12B. {ECO:0000250}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the IL-6 superfamily. {ECO:0000305}.
