CC -!- FUNCTION: Acts partially redundantly with other irx members in neural
CC patterning. Required for formation of the posterior forebrain,
CC midbrain, hindbrain, and to a lesser extent, spinal cord. Patterns the
CC neuroectoderm in both the anterior/posterior and dorsal/ventral axes.
CC Does not appear to play a role in pronephros kidney development.
CC Involved in craniofacial and gonadal development. Modulates the
CC migration of progenitor cell populations in branchial arches and gonads
CC by repressing CXCL12. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:19268445,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:22581230}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000255, ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Early in gastrulation, expressed in cells beneath
CC the blastopore lip. Subsequently expressed in the neural plate in
CC overlapping patterns with other irx members, which all share an
CC anterior border of expression. At the time of neural tube closure
CC (stage 19) in regions of the midbrain, hindbrain, neural tube and optic
CC vesicle, where expression continues during tailbud stages. In stage 34,
CC expressed throughout the eye retina. Does not appear to be expressed in
CC the developing heart or pronephros. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11455441,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:12701098, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17875669,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:18715948, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19268445}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: By hoxb4 and hoxb5. Down-regulated by hoxb9.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12701098}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the TALE/IRO homeobox family. {ECO:0000255}.
