CC -!- FUNCTION: Lectin specific for galactose (Gal) and its derivatives.
CC Induces apoptosis. Has cytotoxic activity against several human cancer
CC cell lines. Is less cytotoxic to normal human cells.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12963119, ECO:0000269|PubMed:15493877}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Disulfide-linked dimer of A and B chains.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12963119}.
CC -!- PTM: Glycosylated. High-mannose type oligosaccharides.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12963119}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Cytotoxic activity repressed by addition of Gal and its
CC derivatives. Melibiose preferentially protects normal cells from
CC apoptosis as compared with transformed cells. The inhibitory
CC concentration 50% (IC50) is 0.8 ng/ml for transformed cells and 10
CC ng/ml for normal cells.
