CC -!- FUNCTION: J region of the variable domain of immunoglobulin lambda
CC light chains that participates in the antigen recognition
CC (PubMed:24600447). Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are
CC membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes. In
CC the recognition phase of humoral immunity, the membrane-bound
CC immunoglobulins serve as receptors which, upon binding of a specific
CC antigen, trigger the clonal expansion and differentiation of B
CC lymphocytes into immunoglobulins-secreting plasma cells. Secreted
CC immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, which
CC results in the elimination of bound antigens (PubMed:22158414,
CC PubMed:20176268). The antigen binding site is formed by the variable
CC domain of one heavy chain, together with that of its associated light
CC chain. Thus, each immunoglobulin has two antigen binding sites with
CC remarkable affinity for a particular antigen. The variable domains are
CC assembled by a process called V-(D)-J rearrangement and can then be
CC subjected to somatic hypermutations which, after exposure to antigen
CC and selection, allow affinity maturation for a particular antigen
CC (PubMed:20176268, PubMed:17576170). {ECO:0000303|PubMed:17576170,
CC ECO:0000303|PubMed:20176268, ECO:0000303|PubMed:22158414,
CC ECO:0000303|PubMed:24600447}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Immunoglobulins are composed of two identical heavy chains and
CC two identical light chains; disulfide-linked.
CC {ECO:0000303|PubMed:20176268}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted {ECO:0000303|PubMed:20176268,
CC ECO:0000303|PubMed:22158414}. Cell membrane
CC {ECO:0000303|PubMed:20176268, ECO:0000303|PubMed:22158414}.
CC -!- POLYMORPHISM: The sequence shown is that of IMGT allele IGLJ1*01.
CC {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- CAUTION: There are several genes encoding the J region in the
CC immunoglobulin lambda locus. The peptide described in this entry is a
CC representative for all the peptides encoded by these genes. For an
CC example of a full-length immunoglobulin lambda light chain see AC
CC P0DOX8. {ECO:0000305}.
