CC -!- FUNCTION: Acts in a cell autonomous fashion to specify the properties
CC of the sensory ray and non-autonomously in the choice of hypodermal
CC versus neuroblast cell fate. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10021351,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:10545035, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11500979,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:17506990, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8582275}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expressed from the onset of gastrulation,
CC beginning with the dorsal hyp7 cells. Subsequently detected in other
CC cell types including hypodermal cells, neuronal cells near the
CC pharyngeal bulbs, neurons along the ventral nerve cord, the AVM, HOA,
CC HOB, PLM and VA3 neurons, some body wall muscles, and the ray cells.
CC During the L4 stage, expressed within neuron A of all ray cells, neuron
CC B of rays 3 and 6, and the structural cell of ray 6.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11500979}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Transcription is repressed by heat shock.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10545035}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: In the male tail, ray precursor cells show
CC altered fates. Conical sensory ray 6 is absent as it appears to fuse
CC with ray 4. Males show reduced body length and uncoordinated movement
CC in a backwards locomotion. Hermaphrodites produce a reduced brood size
CC due to a decreased number of laid eggs. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:8582275}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the mab-21 family. {ECO:0000305}.
