CC -!- FUNCTION: Transcription factor. Plays a role in the epithelialization
CC of somitic mesoderm and in the development of cardiac mesoderm. Defines
CC the rostrocaudal patterning of the somites by participating in distinct
CC Notch pathways. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15677726,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:17306789}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: No expression was detected in adult tissues except
CC       the testis. Expression in the testis was regulated developmentally;
CC expressed 2 weeks after birth, and increases, reaching the full
CC expression level in mature testes. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:8787751}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: The earliest expression is detected at the
CC junction of the epiblast and extraembryonic ectoderm, which is the
CC initiation site for gastrulation. Around 6.5-6.75 dpc, expression
CC becomes evident as gastrulation progresses. Expression does not spread
CC over all mesodermal cells; it is seen only in a fraction of cells,
CC particularly those in the early emergence group destined to become the
CC extraembryonic mesoderm and the most posterior part of the tailbud.
CC Expression remains for a while at the base of the allantois, and then
CC spreads out to the lateral margins of the tail bud mesoderm. Expressed
CC in the anterior presomitic mesoderm in a broad or thin stripe pattern.
CC Expressed in the paraxial mesoderm during somitogenesis. Expression
CC disappears before 8.5 dpc. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10887078,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:15677726, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17306789,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:8787751}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Expression is induced by Notch signaling.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Mice embryos exhibit defects in single heart tube
CC formation, due to a delay in mesodermal migration. However, the cells
CC eventually acquired migratory activity and gave rise to an abnormal
CC heart tube. Mice lacking Mesp1 and Mesp2 die around 9.5 dpc. The major
CC defect is the apparent lack of any mesodermal layer between endoderm
CC and ectoderm and a defect in the migratory activity of mesodermal
CC cells. It seems that a compensatory mechanism exists in which Mesp1
CC expression is up-regulated in the absence of Mesp2. Mesp1 may be
CC involved in the rescue of somitogenesis in the null Mesp2 embryos.
