CC -!- FUNCTION: Mating type proteins are sequence specific DNA-binding
CC proteins that act as master switches in yeast differentiation by
CC controlling gene expression in a cell type-specific fashion.
CC Transcriptional corepressor that acts in conjunction with A1 to repress
CC transcription both of homozygote-specific genes and of genes necessary
CC for the white-opaque switch, a prerequisite for mating.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12176317, ECO:0000269|PubMed:14622594}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Forms a heterodimer with A1. {ECO:0000250}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000255|PROSITE-ProRule:PRU00108}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Induced by HBR1 in response to hemoglobin and growth
CC signals. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15189997}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: The C.albicans mating-type-like (MTL) locus contains, in
CC addition to the genes for the regulatory proteins (MTLA1, MTLA2,
CC MTLALPHA1 and MTLALPHA2), a and alpha idiomorphs of a
CC phosphatidylinositol kinase (PIKA and PIKALPHA), a poly(A) polymerase
CC (PAPA and PAPALPHA) and an oxysterol binding protein-like protein (OBPA
CC and OBPALPHA). MTLALPHA2 is not represented in the genomic sequence of
CC strain SC5314 because that haploid assembly includes the mating type a
CC allele of this locus. {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Most C.albicans strains are heterozygous at the MTL
CC locus and do not readily undergo white-opaque switching and mating, but
CC mating occurs in hemi- or homozygous strains. Mating takes place in
CC opaque cells, produces tetraploid progeny and seems to occur rarely, if
CC at all, in nature. Conservation of mating capacity is rather thought to
CC be due to the simultaneously regulated white-opaque switch, which seems
CC to play an important role in host commensalism.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the TALE/M-ATYP homeobox family. {ECO:0000305}.
