CC -!- FUNCTION: Toxic component of a type II toxin-antitoxin (TA) system.
CC Binds to 50S ribosomal subunits, preventing them from associating with
CC 30S subunits to form 70S ribosomes (By similarity). In this strain of
CC E.coli low levels of PasT complement operon disruption, however high
CC levels are toxic; their effects are abrogated by high level expression
CC of cognate antitoxin PasI. Plays a role in persistence after antibiotic
CC exposure and survival of nitrosative stress; the toxic and persistence
CC phenotypes are conferred by the same N-terminal region of the protein,
CC while the stress resistance effects can be uncoupled from them in
CC deletion mutants. {ECO:0000250, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23055930}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Associates with 50S ribosomes. {ECO:0000250}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Deletion of the pasT-pasI operon yields a
CC defective infection of mouse kidney but not bladder. On rich medium
CC operon deletion decreases bacterial persistence after antibiotic
CC exposure about 100-fold. Forms small colonies on rich medium. Delays
CC growth on minimal medium supplemented with threonine, increased
CC sensitivity to oxidative and nitrosative stress. Growth defects are
CC complemented by low levels of PasT expression.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:23055930}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: This strain of E.coli has only 6 recognizable intact TA
CC systems, whereas E.coli MG1655 strain K12 has at least 16. This may
CC explain in part the differences between the 2 strains.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the ribosome association toxin RatA family.
CC {ECO:0000305}.
