RT "The evolution of fangs, venom, and mimicry systems in blenny fishes.";
RL Curr. Biol. 27:1184-1191(2017).
CC -!- FUNCTION: Met-enkephalins compete with and mimic the effects of opiate
CC drugs. They play a role in a number of physiologic functions, including
CC pain perception and responses to stress. Enkephalin peptides found in
CC Meiacanthus fangblennies induce physiological effects via their
CC interaction with delta-type opioid receptors (OPRD1) (tested on
CC M.grammistes). Therefore, finding a proenkephalin sequence in
CC M.atrodorsalis venom suggests that this protein act in the same manner
CC (Probable). {ECO:0000305|PubMed:28366739}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted {ECO:0000305|PubMed:28366739}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed by the venom gland. Moderately expressed
CC in the venom gland transcriptome. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28366739}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: In contrast to venom of most venomous species, the venom
CC of Meiacanthus fangblennies is relatively painless, when tested on
CC mammals. While species-specific nociceptive effects are possible, this
CC defensive venom is surprisingly multifunctional, being markedly
CC hypotensive (via neuropeptide Y and/ or enkephalins), weakly neurotoxic
CC (unknown components, possibly PLA2s), and perhaps also pro-inflammatory
CC (PLA2s and/or enkephalins). The pronounced hypotensive effects induced
CC by venom peptides seem highly likely to affect the coordination and/or
CC swim performance of envenomed fishes and therefore likely confer a
CC fitness advantage to the fangblenny by facilitating escape from
CC predators. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28366739}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the opioid neuropeptide precursor family.
