CC -!- FUNCTION: N-terminal fragment of the PhnE protein, part of a
CC phosphonate usage operon that is cryptic in K12 strains. Growth of K12
CC strains on phosphonate can be observed when it is used as the sole
CC phosphorus source after a 60 hour lag period, suggesting the operon is
CC activated (PubMed:2155195). An intact PhnE in strain B is (AC
CC A0A140NFA3). Part of the binding-protein-dependent transport system for
CC phosphonates; probably responsible for the translocation of the
CC substrate across the membrane (Probable). {ECO:0000305|PubMed:2155195}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: If the reading frame is restored, the complex is composed of
CC two ATP-binding proteins (PhnC), two transmembrane proteins (PhnE) and
CC a solute-binding protein (PhnD) (Probable). {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell inner membrane {ECO:0000255}; Multi-pass
CC membrane protein {ECO:0000255}.
CC -!- CAUTION: Could be the product of a pseudogene. In K12 strains the phnE
CC gene has an 8-bp insertion, absent from the strain B gene, which causes
CC a frameshift mutation (PubMed:1840580). In 8 K12 derivatives selected
CC for their ability to grow on phosphonate this repeat is no longer
CC present, which restores an intact PhnE open reading frame
CC (PubMed:1840580). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:1840580}.
CC -!- SEQUENCE CAUTION:
