CC -!- FUNCTION: Component of the packaging machinery which encapsidates the
CC viral DNA into preformed capsids and transcriptional activator of the
CC viral major late promoter (MLP). Binds, along with packaging proteins 1
CC and 3, to the specific packaging sequence on the left end of viral
CC genomic DNA and plays an active role in packaging of the viral genome
CC into preformed capsids. Specifically binds to the 5'-TTTG-3'
CC nucleotides of the repeats making up the packaging sequence. Forms a
CC transcription factor called DEF-A through cooperative binding with
CC packaging protein 1 (Probable). DEF-A binds to downstream elements of
CC the major late promoter (MLP) and stimulates transcription from the MLP
CC after initiation of viral DNA replication. Simultaneously suppresses
CC early gene expression and is thus likely to participate in the early-
CC late switch in the expression pattern of the late viral proteins. May
CC as well enhance transcription from IVa2 and pIX promoters.

CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:20621673, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22811519, ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Part of a genome packaging complex composed of packaging
CC proteins 1, 2 and 3; this complex specifically binds to the packaging
CC sequence on the left end of viral genomic DNA and performs packaging of
CC the viral genome. Self-assembles into higher-order structures.
CC       {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17804492, ECO:0000269|PubMed:20925313,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:22811519}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Host nucleus {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22944109}.
CC   -!- ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS:
CC       Event=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=2;
CC       Name=Packaging protein 2; Synonyms=Packaging protein 22K, L4-22K;
CC         IsoId=P0DJX1-1; Sequence=Displayed;
CC       Name=Protein 33K; Synonyms=Splicing factor 33K, L4-33K;
CC         IsoId=P24939-1; Sequence=External;
CC -!- INDUCTION: Expressed at the late phase of the viral replicative cycle.
CC Probably already expressed from the early to late transition.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: All late proteins expressed from the major late promoter
CC are produced by alternative splicing and alternative polyadenylation of
CC the same gene giving rise to non-overlapping ORFs. Expression of
CC packaging protein 2 and splicing factor is controlled by a L4 promoter
CC distinct from the major late promoter.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: [Isoform Packaging protein 2]: Unspliced isoform.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the adenoviridae splicing factor family.
