CC -!- FUNCTION: One of the components of the core complex of photosystem II
CC (PSII). Essential for PSII function, it may be important for
CC unidirectionality of electron flow (PubMed:11546758, PubMed:12655396,
CC PubMed:14979726) and/or assembly of the oxygen evolving complex
CC (PubMed:11827973). PSII is a light-driven water:plastoquinone
CC oxidoreductase that uses light energy to abstract electrons from H(2)O,
CC generating O(2) and a proton gradient subsequently used for ATP
CC formation. It consists of a core antenna complex that captures photons,
CC and an electron transfer chain that converts photonic excitation into a
CC charge separation. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_01305,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:11546758, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11827973,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:12655396, ECO:0000269|PubMed:14979726}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: PSII is composed of 1 copy each of membrane proteins PsbA,
CC PsbB, PsbC, PsbD, PsbE, PsbF, PsbH, PsbI, PsbJ, PsbK, PsbL, PsbM, PsbT,
CC PsbX, PsbY, PsbZ, Ycf12, at least 3 peripheral proteins of the oxygen-
CC evolving complex and a large number of cofactors. It forms dimeric
CC complexes. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_01305,
CC ECO:0000305|PubMed:11827973}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Plastid, chloroplast thylakoid membrane
CC {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_01305}; Single-pass membrane protein
CC {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_01305}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Able to assemble functional PSII, however
CC electron flow is deregulated; forward flow from Q(A) to plastoquinone
CC is slower while reduction of the oxygen evolving complex is faster,
CC loss of light-activated, redox-dependent phosphorylation of LCHII,
CC plants senesce quickly (PubMed:11546758, PubMed:12655396,
CC PubMed:14979726). Plants are hypersensitive to light, cannot grow
CC photoautotrophically and have drastically reduced oxygen-evolving
CC capacity. Dramatic reduction in PSI subunits, almost complete loss of
CC PsbP, a subunit of the oxygen-evolving complex (PubMed:11827973).
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11546758, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11827973,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:12655396, ECO:0000269|PubMed:14979726}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the PsbJ family. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-
CC Rule:MF_01305}.
