CC -!- FUNCTION: Can catalyze the hydrolysis of ATP in the presence of single-
CC stranded DNA, the ATP-dependent uptake of single-stranded DNA by duplex
CC DNA, and the ATP-dependent hybridization of homologous single-stranded
CC DNAs. It interacts with LexA causing its activation and leading to its
CC autocatalytic cleavage.
CC -!- FUNCTION: Deletion of this gene leads to the inability of the bacteria
CC to perform homologous recombination, and markedly increases UV
CC sensitivity.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00268}.
CC -!- PTM: The protein migrates as a 40 kDa protein in strains 69A and NCTC
CC 11637. When overexpressed in E.coli a 38 kDa protein is made which is
CC unable to complement the E.coli deletion mutant. It has been suggested
CC this size difference is due to a post-translational modification.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the RecA family. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-
CC Rule:MF_00268}.
