CC -!- FUNCTION: N protein regulates the transition from the early to the
CC middle stage of lytic development.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Protein N is an immediate early function essential for
CC all other phage vegetative functions.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Protein N is required to overcome termination of
CC transcription.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Protein N is effective in trans at a variety of
CC terminators located at a distance from phage promoters, but absolutely
CC dependent upon lambda-coded sites called nut, which must lie cis to the
CC terminators acted upon.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Protein N is type specific, in that the antitermination
CC function of one lambdoid phage cannot, in general, complement a mutant
CC function in another.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Protein N is dependent upon host proteins, known by the
CC existence of mutant host strains which block N function by their direct
CC biochemical interaction with N and by the evidence for a recognition
CC site for one of them (nusA) adjacent to the nut sites in the early
CC operons of lambdoid phages.
