CC -!- FUNCTION: Testis-specific component of the ribosome, which is required
CC for the transition from prophase to metaphase in male meiosis I
CC (PubMed:28502657). Compensates for the inactivated X-linked RPL10
CC paralog during spermatogenesis (PubMed:28502657). The ribosome is a
CC large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the synthesis of
CC proteins in the cell (PubMed:28502657). The small ribosomal subunit
CC (SSU) binds messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and translates the encoded message
CC by selecting cognate aminoacyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules (By
CC similarity). The large subunit (LSU) contains the ribosomal catalytic
CC site termed the peptidyl transferase center (PTC), which catalyzes the
CC formation of peptide bonds, thereby polymerizing the amino acids
CC delivered by tRNAs into a polypeptide chain (By similarity). The
CC nascent polypeptides leave the ribosome through a tunnel in the LSU and
CC interact with protein factors that function in enzymatic processing,
CC targeting, and the membrane insertion of nascent chains at the exit of
CC the ribosomal tunnel (By similarity). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q96L21,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:28502657}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit (LSU).
CC {ECO:0000305|PubMed:28502657}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q96L21}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Testis-specific. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28502657}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Spermatogenic failure and male infertility
CC (PubMed:28502657). Spermatocytes show defects in the transition from
CC prophase to metaphase of meiosis I due to impaired ribosome biogenesis
CC in late prophase spermatocytes (PubMed:28502657).
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28502657}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the universal ribosomal protein uL16 family.
CC {ECO:0000305}.
