CC -!- FUNCTION: Immunity protein that provides protection for the cell
CC against the toxic effects of SDP, its own SdpC-derived killing factor,
CC and that functions as a receptor/signal transduction protein as well.
CC Once SDP accumulates in the extracellular milieu, SdpI binds to SDP,
CC causing sequestration of SdpR at the bacterial membrane.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16469701, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22469514}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane {ECO:0000305}; Multi-pass membrane
CC protein {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: By Spo0A during nutrient starvation, through its direct
CC negative control of AbrB, repressed by AbrB during regular growth when
CC nutrients are plentiful, and also by SdpR (PubMed:16469701). Induced by
CC expression of SDP (active peptide of sdpC) (PubMed:16469701,
CC PubMed:23687264). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16469701,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:23687264}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Results in increased SigW expression which is
CC dependent on SdpC. Results in weaker growth (70% of wild-type cell
CC density) on LB medium, with more pronounced effects on sporulation
CC medium (15% of wild-type). Concomitant deletion of SigW results in
CC greatly diminished growth (5% of wild-type on LB and 3% on sporulation
CC medium). Over time, single SdpI mutant stops growing on sporulation
CC medium, while the SdpI SigW double mutant eventually lyses. Deletion of
CC RsiW restores growth of the SdpI single mutant to near wild-type
CC levels. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16629676}.
