CC -!- FUNCTION: Cross-linked envelope protein of keratinocytes. It is a
CC keratinocyte protein that first appears in the cell cytosol, but
CC ultimately becomes cross-linked to membrane proteins by
CC transglutaminase. All that results in the formation of an insoluble
CC envelope beneath the plasma membrane. May participate widely in the
CC construction of cell envelopes in cornifying epithelia characterized by
CC either increased thickness or a requirement for extreme flexibility.

CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in fetal periderm, hair follicles and in
CC the thickened epidermis of the lip and footpad. Also present in the
CC epithelia of various tissues such as the penis, vagina, forestomach,
