CC -!- FUNCTION: Olfactory receptor specific for trimethylamine, a trace amine
CC enriched in the urine of male mice, playing a role in social behavior.
CC Trimethylamine is present at high concentration in the urine of male
CC mice after puberty and acts as an attractant. This receptor is probably
CC mediated by the G(s)-class of G-proteins which activate adenylate
CC cyclase. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16878137, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23177478}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane {ECO:0000250}; Multi-pass membrane
CC protein {ECO:0000250}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Specifically expressed in neurons of the olfactory
CC epithelium, to discrete glomeruli predominantly localized to a confined
CC bulb region. Present in the dorsal area of the main olfactory
CC epithelium. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16878137, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22837392}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Mice lacking Taar2, Taar3, Taar4, Taar5, Taar6,
CC Taar7a, Taar7b, Taar7d, Taar7e, Taar7f, Taar8a, Taar8b, Taar8c and
CC Taar9 show no visible phenotype or behavioral deficits. They however
CC show an absence of aversion to low concentrations of amines such as 2-
CC phenylethylamine, isopentylamine, N-methylpiperidine and cadaverine.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:23624375}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Trimethylamine is a bacterial metabolite found in some
CC animal odors, and is a repulsive odor associated with bad breath and
CC spoiled food for most organisms, except for M.musculus, where it acts
CC as an attractant (PubMed:16878137, PubMed:23177478).
CC {ECO:0000305|PubMed:16878137, ECO:0000305|PubMed:23177478}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family.
CC {ECO:0000255|PROSITE-ProRule:PRU00521}.
