CC -!- FUNCTION: Regulator of crossing-over during meiosis. Involved in
CC initiation and/or maintenance of chromosome synapsis and formation of
CC       crossovers. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18369460}.
CC   -!- SUBUNIT: Interacts with SYCP2 (PubMed:18316482). Interacts with PBXIP1;
CC may prevent interaction between PBXIP1 and ESR2 (PubMed:22383461).
CC Interacts with SHOC1 (By similarity). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q8IYF3,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22383461}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Chromosome {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:18369460, ECO:0000269|PubMed:30272023,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:30746471}. Note=Forms arrays of discrete foci along
CC synaptonemal complexes in spermatocytes and fetal oocytes.
CC   -!- ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS:
CC       Event=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=2;
CC       Name=1;
CC         IsoId=Q14AT2-1; Sequence=Displayed;
CC       Name=2;
CC         IsoId=Q14AT2-2; Sequence=VSP_027262, VSP_027263;
CC   -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Testis-specific. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11279525,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18369460}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: In spermatocytes, not observed on asynapsed
CC chromosomes in leptotene and appears on synapsed regions in zygotene
CC and on the fully synapsed chromosomes in early pachytene. Disappears in
CC late pachytene and is not observed in diplotene spermatocytes. A
CC similar localization is detected on female meiotic chromosomes (at
CC       protein level). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:18369460}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Defects in meiotic double-strand breaks (DSBs)
CC repair and reduced crossover formation. However, discrepancies exist
CC between the different reports. According to a report, deletion induces
CC male sterility (PubMed:18316482). Females are fertile with reduced
CC litter. Adult mice show an arrest in male meiosis and aberrant
CC chromosome segregation in anaphase spermatocytes. Chromosomal asynapsis
CC and reduced crossover formation are observed, leading to elimination of
CC spermatocytes at the pachytene and anaphase I stages (PubMed:18316482).
CC According to another report, both male and female mice are fertile and
CC produce normal-sized litters with normal Mendelian ratios
CC       (PubMed:18369460). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18316482,
CC       ECO:0000269|PubMed:18369460}.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Represent the only meiosis-specific factor encoded by
CC the chromosome X in mouse. {ECO:0000305|PubMed:18316482}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the SPO22 family. {ECO:0000305}.
