CC -!- FUNCTION: Regulator of the cAMP signaling pathway specific to sexual
CC development. Controls the levels of external cAMP by regulating the
CC expression of phosphodiesterase pdsA and its inhibitor pdiA.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15817229}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane {ECO:0000305}; Multi-pass membrane
CC protein {ECO:0000305}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expression in fusion-competent cells is about 6
CC times higher than fusion-incompetent cells. Remains high until 8 hours
CC of sexual development, and then slightly decreases. In the asexual
CC development, the transcript level increases temporarily during the pre-
CC aggregation stage (4 hours), and then returns to the basal level.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15817229}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Null cells produce tiny macrocysts and have
CC increased numbers of peripheral cells during sexual development.
CC Macrocyst formation by null cells is much less sensitive to the
CC addition of exogenous cAMP compared to wild-type. The mRNA level of
CC phosphodiesterase (pdsA) is higher and that of its inhibitor (pdiA) is
CC lower in the null cells compared to wild-type during sexual
CC development. The expression of regA, which regulates the intercellular
CC cAMP signaling pathway is not affected. Null cells show less extensive
CC cell aggregation toward the zygote giant cells and many cells remain
CC around poorly formed macrocysts. The expression of the carA is
CC unchanged or slightly higher in the null cells, while that of the carC
CC is much reduced. Chemotaxis toward cAMP during asexual development is
CC indistinguishable between the wild-type and null cells.
