CC -!- FUNCTION: May be required during spermatogenesis, probably by
CC participating in the repression of retrotransposable elements and
CC prevent their mobilization (Probable). With its paralog, Tex19.1,
CC collaborates with the Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) pathway, which
CC mediates the repression of transposable elements during meiosis by
CC forming complexes composed of piRNAs and Piwi proteins. Interacts with
CC Piwi proteins and directly binds piRNAs, a class of 24 to 30 nucleotide
CC RNAs that are generated by a Dicer-independent mechanism and are
CC primarily derived from transposons and other repeated sequence elements
CC (PubMed:28254886). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28254886,
CC ECO:0000305|PubMed:28254886}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Interacts with UBR2 (PubMed:21103378). Interacts with piRNA-
CC associated proteins DDX4, EDC4, MAEL, PIWIL1, PIWIL2, RANBP9 and TDRD6
CC (Probable). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21103378, ECO:0000305|PubMed:28254886}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q99MV2}.
CC Note=Was initially reported to localize in the nucleus.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18096721}.
CC -!- TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Specifically expressed in somatic cells of male
CC gonad lineage. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18096721,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:28254886}.
CC -!- DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expressed in the ectoderm and then in primordial
CC germ cells (PGCs). Expressed in testis from embryos (13.5 dpc) to
CC adulthood in gonocytes and spermatocytes.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22447323}.
CC -!- DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Males deficient for both for Tex19.1 and Tex19.2
CC have impaired spermatogenesis, small testes and are infertile. They
CC show vacuolization and seminiferous epithelium degeneration as early as
CC P16. They have defects in meiotic chromosome synapsis, persistence of
CC DNA double-strand breaks during meiosis, lack of post-meiotic germ cell
CC and up-regulation of MMERVK10C retrotransposon expression. Number of
CC females double knockout for Tex19.1 and Tex19.2 surviving 2 weeks or
CC more is reduced compared to males. Females display normal fertility.
CC Surviving mutants do not present gross somatic abnormalities.
CC {ECO:0000269|PubMed:28254886}.
