CC -!- FUNCTION: Receptor for arginine vasopressin. The activity of this
CC receptor is mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidyl-
CC inositol-calcium second messenger system. Involved in social memory
CC formation. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15201909}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: In prairie and pine voles, the 5' regulatory region of
CC AVPR1A contains a microsatellite region that is virtually absent from
CC montane and meadow voles. This species-specific microsatellite
CC polymorphism modulates gene expression in a cell-type-dependent manner
CC and generates a great individual variability in the brain expression
CC pattern. This polymorphism is correlated with monogamous social
CC organization.
CC -!- MISCELLANEOUS: Prairie voles exhibit a monogamous social structure in
CC nature, whereas closely related meadow voles are solitary and
CC polygamous. AVPR1A is expressed at higher levels in the ventral
CC forebrain of monogamous than in promiscuous vole species, whereas
CC dopamine receptor distribution is relatively conserved between species.
CC The partner preference formation in the socially promiscuous meadow
CC vole is increased by AVPR1A gene transfer into the ventral forebrain.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family.
CC Vasopressin/oxytocin receptor subfamily. {ECO:0000255|PROSITE-
CC ProRule:PRU00521}.
