CC -!- FUNCTION: Master transcriptional regulator of the switch between 2
CC heritable states, the white and opaque states. These 2 cell types
CC differ in many characteristics, including cell structure, mating
CC competence, and virulence. Each state is heritable for many
CC generations, and switching between states occurs stochastically, at low
CC frequency. WOR1 Binds the intergenic regions upstream of the genes
CC encoding three additional transcriptional regulators of white-opaque
CC switching, CZF1, EFG1, and WOR2. Phenotypic switching from the white to
CC the opaque phase is a necessary step for mating. Plays a role in cell
CC adhesion and pseudohyphal growth. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16321041,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:16899543, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16905649,

CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:22095082, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22621896}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16950924}.
CC -!- INDUCTION: Only expressed in opaque cells, in which it forms a positive
CC feedback loop since it binds its own DNA regulatory region and
CC activates its own transcription leading to the accumulation of high
CC levels of WOR1. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16899543,
CC ECO:0000269|PubMed:16950924}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the MIT1/WOR1 family. {ECO:0000305}.
