CC -!- FUNCTION: Pro-inflammatory cytokine that is involved in a wide variety
CC of processes such as chemotaxis, differentiation, and activation of
CC peripheral immune cells, regulation of cell growth, apoptosis and
CC modulation of angiostatic effects (By similarity). Plays thereby an
CC important role during viral infections by stimulating the activation
CC and migration of immune cells to the infected sites (By similarity).
CC Mechanistically, binding of CXCL10 to the CXCR3 receptor activates G
CC protein-mediated signaling and results in downstream activation of
CC phospholipase C-dependent pathway, an increase in intracellular calcium
CC production and actin reorganization. In turn, recruitment of activated
CC Th1 lymphocytes occurs at sites of inflammation (By similarity).
CC Activation of the CXCL10/CXCR3 axis also plays an important role in
CC neurons in response to brain injury for activating microglia, the
CC resident macrophage population of the central nervous system, and
CC directing them to the lesion site. This recruitment is an essential
CC element for neuronal reorganization (By similarity).
CC {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P02778, ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P17515}.
CC -!- SUBUNIT: Monomer, dimer, and tetramer. Interacts with CXCR3 (via N-
CC terminus). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P02778}.
CC -!- SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P02778}.
CC -!- SIMILARITY: Belongs to the intercrine alpha (chemokine CxC) family.
CC {ECO:0000305}.
